Skills shortages and the drive to net zero

18 May 2023

Did you visit us at Maintec last year and try our golf simulator? This year we are thrilled to be hosting an exciting new activity…

Join us on stand D60 and take a shot on our Wild West shooting simulator!

We are an employee-owned recruitment consultancy, specialising in roles within; Engineering & Manufacturing, IT & Digital, Service & Sales and Science & Technology, across England & Wales.

Our mission is to bring together employers and the best technical talent, which we know has never been tougher in the current climate, so let us help..

Given the drive to carbon net zero and the aims for 2035 the expectation of over 400,000 new jobs to support this energy transition and innovation in this period will only exaggerate imbalance between the high demand for and the low supply of skilled technical workers which already exists.

What can you do?

Creativity and open-mindedness are essential in dealing with the challenges of recruitment in 2023

  1. Be open to the idea of employing older workers. Recognising the value of experience and loyalty in this group. Retirement age is planned to be 68 by 2040
  2. Embrace diversity. 6 months after qualification Black and Asian engineering graduates are twice as likely to be unemployed as their White counterparts. Whilst 12% of engineers are women and 9% declare a disability. Clearly the UK’s engineering sector is considerably less diverse than the general population, meaning many groups are underrepresented in the workforce.
  3. Know the market. A professional recruitment partner can save you a lot of time and resources whilst accessing the best candidates but taking into account the cost of a bad hire and loss in productivity, they can save you money too.
