Ensure your spill responders are up to date with spill control techniques and legislation

25 January 2013

Major pollution incidents can in many cases be prevented if appropriate pollution prevention measures are taken at an early stage.

“Major pollution incidents can in many cases be prevented if appropriate pollution prevention measures are taken at an early stage. Planning is the key to success, and both preventative measures and incident response strategies need to be carefully addressed.” Environment Agency (EA)

Your spill responders are your most valuable asset in ensuring protection of your site and the environment from pollution incidents. As legislation changes and enhancements are made in spill prevention products it is critical that spill responders and environmental officers are aware of this. The effectiveness of your sites spill prevention strategy and response plan is greatly influenced by staff training.

What does a spill training programme provide:

  • The knowledge and skills needed to safely manage spills on site

  • Understanding of the environmental responsibility of your business

  • An awareness of the potential risks associated with liquid spills

  • Strategies that should be adopted to reduce spill risk

  • The safe and effective use of spill control resources and personal protective equipment

  • Techniques to recover or limit the escape of spilt liquids into the environment

  • Reporting procedures if spills contaminate surface water, ground water or land

Consideration must also be given of course to the immediate, short, medium and long term risks of failing to deal with spillages comprehensively as soon after the event as possible. Darcy can tell you all you need to know to ensure environmental agreed standards are known and applied.
