Boiler breakdown at Thorn Grove primary school in Bishops Stortford left the school without heating or hot water and it had to close until a replacement system was installed. The old boiler used an indirect cylinder to provide hot water.

Welwyn Garden City consultants Mouchel decided to replace it with separate boilers for space heating and a decentralised gas fired water heater.

The two boilers selected for Thorn Grove are Upsilon UB140 gas fired models from A.O. Smith and can deliver 140kW output. A.O. Smith can supply a fully pre-fabricated rig system so that up to eight Upsilon boilers can be installed in sequence, back-to-back or side-by-side. The rig includes framework, pipework and low loss header. The Upsilon also comes in outputs of 70 or 110kW, and different boiler capacities can be combined to get the output required. An intelligent sequence controller is built in to each boiler, as is a fully modulating pump.

The boiler is fully modulating for lower gas use with efficiency levels up to 110% and low carbon emission technology with NOx class 5 rating. Maintenance is needed once every 4 years, reducing lifetime costs.
