Belt range meets static conductivity standard

19 June 2015

Gates' newly developed Poly Chain Carbon Volt conforms to the ISO9563 static conductivity standard and will serve any application (grain elevators, storage silos, gas industry, oil refineries and chemical processing plants) required by the ATEX directive.

The new belt range is available from stock in 8M and 14M pitches, in the same widths and lengths as the standard Poly Chain Carbon. Additional widths can be made-to-order.

The Poly Chain Carbon Belt consists of a tough, lightweight polyurethane compound with carbon tensile cord. The carbon fibre reinforcement provides high strength and length stability with improved shock load and fatigue resistance, while reducing stretch and increasing flexibility. The new facing covering the teeth is a graphite fabric giving the belt the necessary static-conductivity. Reverse bending strength is said to be excellent, and impact resistance is reported to be better than that of aramid.

At the same time, the stretch of the belt is virtually zero, resulting from the high E-module of carbon fibres. As a result, the tensioning of the belt remains constant during the whole service life (provided drive installation is correct) and the engineer can save space as well: The high power density allows for the use of narrower belts, and the optimised fatigue strength is the key to the use of smaller pulleys.

Even at high dynamic loads the new belt provides very high power rates. The same is valid for low speed, high torque applications. Thus, Poly Chain GT Carbon is a suitable synchronous drive for a variety of applications. The ribbed belt back improves flexibility and back idlers can be used where required; the basic belt consists of a newly developed, lightweight polyurethane compound which is chemically resistant and ensures optimum connection with the carbon tensile cord.

Gates says testing proves that the power density of Poly Chain GT Carbon is better than that of conventional roller chains and reaches the level of gearboxes.
