Temperature control solutions
08 May 2015
Providing effective cooling and heating solutions to a wide range of processes, ICS Cool Energy recognises the importance of reliable temperature control in order to keep businesses’ running at optimum efficiency. Here, Kevin Whyte discusses the importance of effective temperature control.
We work with an extensive range of companies, from small start-up businesses to large international brands facing many different needs and processes; with the common goal of achieving effective and reliable temperature control to maintain production quality and keep processes running.
Critical cooling
Last summer, when temperatures reached 32°C, we worked with the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) to combat rising temperatures at one of its manufacturing facilities. At the plant, carbon fibre is used to make the hulls of the lifeboats, but combined with the high environmental temperature, the materials become highly sensitive, causing the strength, versatility and durability of the carbon fibre to suffer. Therefore, effective temperature control in the manufacturing facility was urgently needed to lower the environmental temperature in order to maintain the strength of the materials used to avoid a sub-standard finish and a potential rework of the hulls.
ICS Cool Energy supplied a temporary solution consisting of a 135kW iC-660 chiller and five internal 15kW Fan Coil Units. The units were installed to provide flexible temperatures offering cold water through hoses to internally sited fan coil units, which were positioned evenly throughout the facility to provide a constant temperature and eliminate hot spots. "This effective temperature control solution ensured that the RNLI could rely on the manufacturing process to produce the highest quality boats for their vital work.
Cosmetic cooling
Similarly, we worked with a leading international cosmetic company who were experiencing inefficient process control due to an aging chiller which was no longer able to meet the target temperatures, leading to poor product quality, higher volumes of waste and a lower capacity of useable product.
A temperature control solution was needed in order to provide effective speed cooling to the ingredients, creating the optimum consistency and texture, whilst retaining the nutrients in the beauty and skin care products.
ICS Cool Energy supplied a 178kW air cooled chiller which effectively cooled the jacketed vessels, at controlled and stable temperatures, ensuring the ingredients retain their nutrients to produce the highest quality product before packing and distributing.
Carbon fibre process
In contrast to this, one of our engineering customers works heavily with carbon fibre and was struggling with its heating system due to its age and design, resulting in thousands of pounds worth of product being wasted.
A reliable temperature control solution was needed in order to regulate the quality of their resin which is used as a prime component for carbon fibre production. The process temperature needed to be closely monitored in order to ensure the process achieved the highest quality product whilst fulfilling extensive traceability criteria.
ICS Cool Energy supplied 4 x 72kW bespoke oil heated temperature control units to operate in run and stand-by formation, both fitted with a BMS interface for accurate system monitoring of the process information and temperatures for traceability. This temperature control solution meant that the customer’s carbon fibre production is now consistent and closely examined, putting them in the best possible position to further increase production in the future.
