From standalone robotics to ecosystem automation

Standalone robotics chosen for speed and throughput no longer match the realities of European manufacturing; reliability, AI and ecosystem partnerships now define competitive advantage, says Volker Spanier

MANUFACTURERS ACROSS domestic and regional markets are facing mounting pressure from multiple directions, including tariffs, rising energy costs and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, all of which contribute to a more complex operating environment. European industries, particularly automotive, are under increasing pressure from Chinese competitors, whose mix of innovation and competitive pricing continues to gain traction, capturing a growing share of the market.
From throughput to reliability
In response, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis not just on cost, but on sustained production performance, with automation increasingly seen as part of a broader ecosystem. Historically, automation strategies centred on standalone robotics systems, focusing on speed and throughput, often at the expense of integration and longer-term efficiency. However, in the current environment, this model is becoming more difficult to justify as competing on price alone becomes less viable. Differentiation is now shaped by reliability in production. While lower-cost automation solutions may appear attractive upfront, they do not always deliver the same level of consistency in live environments.
Advances in automation are making systems easier to program and redeploy, enabling manufacturers to adapt them to changing production needs. This reduces reliance on highly specialised skills and makes adoption more accessible to organisations without extensive in-house robotics expertise. As a result, automation is no longer limited to large enterprises, with mid-sized manufacturers able to take a more phased approach, starting with smaller deployments and expanding over time as confidence and capability grow.
AI delivers in targeted applications
Alongside these shifts, AI is starting to play a more visible role in manufacturing environments, although at present it’s driving innovation in specific areas such as programming and diagnostics rather than widespread deployment. Its greatest value lies in clearly defined applications where outcomes can be measured.
Similarly, data is also becoming a central component, providing greater visibility into how systems perform in real-world conditions. This supports the identification of inefficiencies, highlights opportunities for improvement and enables more informed operational decision-making. It also underpins proactive maintenance strategies, helping to reduce unplanned downtime and extending automation system lifespan.
Ecosystem partners change the economics
Supporting this shift, technology partners (such as system integrators and machine builders) are playing an important role in tailoring robotics and automation to specific applications.
This collaboration is introducing more flexible commercial models, including leasing and service-based options, allowing manufacturers to adopt automation without significant upfront investment. In turn, this enables organisations to align spending more closely with demand, particularly in sectors with shorter product lifecycles and rapidly changing requirements.
The pressures driving these changes - tariffs, energy costs, intensifying competition from Chinese manufacturers - are unlikely to ease. What's changing is how manufacturers respond. The ecosystem approach offers a route to building production capability without the rigidity, or the upfront cost, of traditional automation strategies.
