Bearing grease condition analysis for wind turbines

03 June 2013

Availability is key to the operation of wind turbines as unplanned downtime resulting from component wear is very costly.

Repairs or bearing exchange are to be undertaken only in times of planned downtime and should be prevented whenever possible; lubricant analysis can provide essential information.

While used oil analysis is already standard for gear oils, Grease Condition Analysis service from Klüber Lubrication is now also available for lubricants in generators, blades and main bearings of wind turbines as part of KlüberMonitor.

Bearing grease condition analysis on a regular basis provide information on the current condition of the grease and lubricated components.

Based on analysis results, the failure risk of expensive components or systems can be reduced and useful life be increased.

"Klüber Lubrication considers this offer to be an element of sustainable customer care", says Ari-Pekka Holm, Manager Business Unit Wind Energy at Klüber Lubrication.

"Our new grease condition analysis service informs on operating conditions and gives an early warning sign if something is wrong."

Grease condition analysis in Klüber Lubrication laboratories provides information on several aspects of a grease's current condition, including general grease condition, behaviour of the additives, oxidation, wear particles, mixing with foreign matter and the extent to which old and new lubricant are mixed. A sampling kit with detailed information is available from Klüber Lubrication.

The experts from Klüber Lubrication follow-up by providing a straightforward, clear report on the results containing recommendations on how to proceed.
