Shrink-fit tool holder
26 November 2013
New from SGS Carbide Tool (UK), the MST Corporation Slimline Z-Chuck is a shrink-fit tool holder that is said to offer a number of benefits when applied to difficult-to-machine materials, or when using aggressive cutting strategies.

The tool holder’s design incorporates two independent features that eliminate the risk of the cutting tool pulling out of the holder, due to chatter or sudden loads and also any rotational slipping of the cutter in the holder.
As well as health and safety concerns, there is the potential of having to scrap the workpiece if the tool pulls out of the holder. This could be serious where the supply of the raw material is expensive. EU MD, Alan Pearce, states: "The Slimline Z-Chuck removes these anxieties. Using the Z Shank standards, the new holder is said to have twice the gripping strength of existing shrink-fit holders.”
Z shank standards are open, so cutting tools can be modified to suit or purchased with the necessary forms. These include a 2mm radius groove and a pair of flat surfaces which varies in size depending on the diameter of the cutting tool. The flats are used to stop the cutter slipping or twisting around the centreline of the holder, as they engage with dogs inside the Slimline Z-Chuck.
