Summer savings and ESOS ready
06 May 2015
A challenge during the summer is to find a productive mix of heating, cooling and lighting at appropriate times of day, particularly with the lighter evenings, warm weather and the requirement to keep equipment and people cool. Here, Lisa Gingell, director, t-mac Technologies, outlines a solution and looks at ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme)
Clever building energy management systems (BeMS) such as t-mac ensure that buildings and equipment are working well, and efficiently. The t-mac system works by monitoring the external temperatures and controlling internal temperatures, whilst maintaining energy efficient measures in the process. A weather feed (or physical temperature and lux sensor) gives an indication of the sudden temperature and light level changes so the internal environment remains suitable for the occupants.
The system enables building users to manage conditions in line with business operations and changing climates whilst ensuring energy efficiency and cost reduction practices are pivotal to the BeMS strategy. The cloud based software, SMART.DASH and apps, supports the management of single or multiple sites and ensures buildings are running effectively and energy efficiently with no need to visit site. The cloud-based software platform enables users to control, view, analyse and report on buildings energy data, collected from areas such as meters, sub-meters, machinery equipment and renewables.
ESOS
The onset of summer should also be a call to action for businesses to start getting ready for the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme, otherwise known as ESOS, which is set to come into force in December 2015. The countdown is on.
ESOS is a great opportunity for businesses to save money and be better environmental citizens. ESOS applies to those businesses with more than 250 employees or a turnover in excess of €50M. The legislation will require them to review the total energy use from their business operations and carry out a proper energy audit.
The legislation also requires that everything from building energy use to transport energy use and industrial processes must be accounted for. A calculation of the amount of energy used per employee must then be produced and potential measures that could save energy require to be identified.
The Government estimates 'a typical ESOS audit will identify potential cost savings that are more than 13.5 times greater than the cost of the audit'. The energy audit will give businesses access to professional advice on how to make accurate energy savings and reduce emissions as a whole. These guidance notes will give businesses the opportunity to put into place energy saving opportunities for the future that will cut cost and emissions.
Taking those lessons learnt to the next level is where the savings can be made – businesses need to use the audit wisely and employ smart technologies such as the t-mac BeMS to make the savings.
Ultimately by getting a business summer-ready with suitable technology, t-mac believes a building can achieve a 20 to 30% reduction in energy consumption plus an ROI by winter 2015 and savings for years to come. With real-time metering, monitoring and controls and cloud-based energy software, apps and dashboards, t-mac is a cost-effective technology that can be applied to energy consuming areas of any business, helping users to comply with legislation while reaping carbon and cost savings within 12 months.
