Health and safety seminars

11 May 2016

Composites UK has teamed up with Dark Matter Composites to provide health and safety events to UK industry.

The first of these events – ‘Glass fibre dust - risks, generation, capture and control measures’ – will take place on the 14th June at Dark Matter Composites’ premises in Redbourn, Hertfordshire.

A seminar on carbon fibre dust has been arranged for 13th September, with another covering ‘Composite processing: Controlling fumes in the workplace’ – to be announced. All sessions will include presentation and demonstration elements with delegates receiving a detailed information sheet on the subject. These events will be relevant to anyone working in the glass or carbon fibre industry or those looking at moving into production.

The information from the events builds upon that contained in the Composites UK online Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) and gives a more detailed insight into these particular issues.

Dr. Sue Halliwell, operations manager at Composites UK said; “As the trade association for the UK composites industry we have always promoted the best practice use of the materials. We are actively involved in the HSE SIMPLC initiative (Safety in Manufacturing Plastics and Composites), which led to the launch of our HSMS last year. We’re now taking this one step further by providing these events through the expertise of Dark Matter Composites.”

Rodney Hansen, MD at Dark Matter Composites, added; “We strongly believe that implementing best practice should not be onerous and can help with the growth and development of the UK composite industry. We felt that some health and safety guidance was too generic and needed a composite specific approach. Our unique and varied customer base gives us an insight into working practices across industry sectors worldwide. Combined with the work we have done on dust capture and control over the last five years, we are delighted to share our experience in these Composites UK events”.

Registration for these events can be made via the Composites UK website (https://compositesuk.co.uk/events/seminars) at £50 + VAT for Composites UK members and £95 + VAT for non-members.
