Navigating a shifting landscape: The UK compressed air industry's resilience

16 October 2024

THE UK compressed air industry has undergone a significant transformation over the past decade.

Factors such as the European trade landscape, the COVID-19 pandemic, rising energy and material costs, a tightening labour market, and a flurry of mergers and acquisitions have presented formidable challenges for businesses operating in this sector.

While the pandemic's immediate impact is fading, the challenges it has brought to the fore remain deeply relevant. As Vanda Jones, then BCAS executive director, noted in 2022, "Manufacturer member companies have encountered similar obstacles to other capital equipment markets, including supply chain disruptions and escalating costs of both energy and components used in the production of compressors, dryers, and related equipment."

"Our distribution members too are facing increased business costs and skills shortages and yet, all our members continue to deliver continuity of service with many companies growing during these challenging times."

Despite these headwinds, the industry's resilience is still evident. A primary service offered by BCAS is market monitoring and performance analysis. The accompanying graph demonstrates that although the current volume of compressors purchased has reduced to pre-pandemic levels, the Kilowatt size has increased.

This suggests that customers are investing in larger machines with greater efficiency levels as they remain mindful of cost and continue to prioritise energy performance.

The industry's resilience in the face of these complex challenges demonstrates its adaptability and commitment to providing vital services and adapting to market trends. This commitment, coupled with the continued investment in new technologies and equipment, suggests a robust future.

Investing in the future: The compressed air industry's people power
The compressed air industry is experiencing a renewed emphasis on investing in its people, promoting ethical and sustainable practices, and championing training and development. These critical topics are discussed frequently at BCAS board level and with its membership, highlighting a shared commitment to growth and progress.

A clear message emerges from these dialogues: our members are eager to engage with the younger generation, presenting the compressed air industry as a compelling career path. BCAS is committed to supporting its members in this endeavour, fostering a culture of talent attraction and retention. Through proactive initiatives, we aim to raise awareness, equip individuals with the skills they need to thrive, and cultivate the next generation of leaders who will shape the industry's future.

Supporting and empowering the future of the industry

As we strive to serve the needs of our industry, the British Compressed Air Society (BCAS) has several exciting projects in development.

1. Employer's guide for apprenticeships: This comprehensive guide will serve as a valuable resource for organisations seeking to implement and manage effective apprenticeship programmes. It provides a structured framework, covering strategic planning, recruitment, and day-to-day management, incorporating best practices and readily adaptable templates.

2. Compressor energy saving resources: Through its ‘10% Taskforce’, BCAS is spearheading initiatives to reduce unnecessary energy consumption in compressed air systems by a significant 10 per cent. Eight CPD-certified modules, designed for convenient ‘coffee break’ learning, cover key topics such as heat recovery, leak management, and correct specification.

3. ISO 11011 training programme: This training programme, based on the compressed air energy standard, is in its final stages of development and is scheduled for launch shortly.

4. Data sheet and verification programme: This initiative enables users to compare the energy performance of compressors on a like-for-like basis, facilitating informed decision-making and optimised energy efficiency.

5. Salary benchmarking survey: BCAS is currently conducting a comprehensive UK-wide pay benchmarking survey for the compressed air and vacuum industry. The resulting data will provide valuable insights into salary levels for sector-specific roles, enabling informed approaches to remuneration.

These initiatives represent just a fraction of the resources BCAS will be making available. We encourage you to explore the wealth of practical, free advice readily accessible on the BCAS website.
