Cementitious spray secures UL durability accreditation
13 February 2020
Promat FENDOLITE MII is a cementitious spray used to protect pipework, structures and vessels from fire in the oil, gas and energy industries. After undergoing tests to demonstrate its long-term durability, it has received UL 2431 accreditation.

In meeting the stringent requirements of the UL 2431 'Durability of Fire Resistive Coatings and Materials' certification, FENDOLITE MII has proven its ability to retain its fire resistive properties after being subjected to various conditioning environments.
The tests to achieve UL 2431 accreditation included subjecting samples to a wide range of mechanical, physical and chemical environmental conditions, which applications would typically be subjected to, before testing fire resistance. This includes exposure to air erosion, salt spray, high impacts, vibration, humidity, UV and solvent spray to reflect the intense operating environments of oil, gas and energy plants. Importantly, passing these tests will become mandatory for UL 1709, the standard for 'Rapid Rise Fire Tests of Protection Materials for Structural Steel', listing in the near future.
This success ensures that Promat FENDOLITE MII now comes with independent assurance on the long term performance capabilities of this established fire protection solution. Applied by a network of Promat-approved applicators for maximum reassurance and traceability, FENDOLITE MII is one of the most widely used fire protection products within Promat’s range of cementitious sprays, which have been used to protect UK petrochemical and offshore sites for over 40 years.
Ian Cowley, Regional Director (UK and Scandinavia) at Promat, says: “The performance capabilities of FENDOLITE MII have always made this a stand-out fire protection solution, particularly in the oil and gas and energy sectors, and this testing success confirms our expectations. Being first in the world to achieve the prestigious UL 2431 accreditation is significant in terms of providing our customers with independently certified assurance and peace of mind that its fire resistive properties will not reduce significantly over time in real-world applications.”
An integrated fire protective coating system, FENDOLITE MII is a spray applied, single package factory controlled premix, based on vermiculite and Portland cement. It produces a monolithic coating able to withstand the thermal shocks experienced in a high intensity hydrocarbon fire, with particular benefit for concrete structures which can be protected from explosive spalling.
Although low in density, thus significantly reducing dead load, FENDOLITE MII is highly durable and will not crack or spall under mechanical impact. In addition to structures and vessels in the oil, gas, petrochemical and power industries, it can be applied on many different types of construction elements, including individual steel or concrete sections, particularly where off-site application is required.
Based at its HQ and manufacturing plant near Manchester, Promat UK is a market leader in passive fire protection, thermal and acoustic insulation. Part of the global Etex Group, the company manufactures high performance insulation for numerous hi-tech, engineering and industrial applications, as well as for the building sector.
