Manoeuvrability and flexibility were key requirements for Whittle Programmed Painting when the company hired a powered access machine from AFI to carry out a painting contract in Derby.

Following an AFI site survey to ascertain the height and outreach required and taking into account various areas with restricted access, AFI specified a JLG 800AJ boom lift for the work The boom lift was hired "At just 4750kg for the HR17 and under 6500kg for the HR21, these machines are substantially lighter than some manufacturer's 45, 50 and 70 foot booms." The Niftylift Hybrid system uses a Tier 4 / EU Stage IIIB compliant 15kW engine coupled with a powerful electric motor. It is said to deliver a 5% increase in power-to-weight ratio and a 40 to 50% fuel saving.

from AFI by Whittle for a contract to paint the exterior concrete and windows on a five-storey office building.

Peter Twells, Whittle Programmed Painting's senior surveyor, said: "The 800AJ boom lift was able to get into some areas where space was limited, and its articulating jib proved to be particularly useful; it enabled operatives to gain better access by manoeuvring the cage into different positions in relation to the boom." The boom lift has a working height of 26.38m, horizontal outreach of 15.74m and a width of 2.44m.
