Large lathe range extended

01 September 2014

The large capacity XL 780 heavy-duty lathe from XYZ Machine Tools extends the company's range of medium-large capacity turning machines.

The range now provides customers with a one-stop-shop for centre lathes, with capacities from 400mm swing, 716mm between centre XYZ Proturn SLX 1630 to the 2200mm swing, 16m between centres XYZ XL lathes, as well as the range of large bore Oil Country lathes.

With its 780mm swing and 3000mm bed length, the XYZ XL 780 complements existing machines in XYZ Machine Tools’ portfolio by providing a heavy-duty and stable machining platform for long and large diameter components. Stability is enhanced by the use of a massive, one-piece, 500mm wide cast bed, and a headstock, containing the 1300revs/min 40hp spindle, with its 160mm spindle bore, and induction hardened gears, precision roller bearings, and high pressure lubrication.

Control is provided by the popular Siemens 828D Shopturn control featuring conversational programming software, which means that users can be in production quickly and easily even with limited programming experience. Other standard equipment on the XYZ XL 780 include a three-jaw 500mm diameter steel chuck, a 4way automatic toolpost, air assist ‘floating’ tailstock, and an electromagnetic spindle brake.

A wide range of options can be specified, including a Rock Steady, to provide optimum support for workpieces across the full 3m bed length. In addition XYZ Machine Tools also offers a wide choice of workholding, including 630mm diameter three- and four-jaw chucks and faceplates up to 700mm diameter. Control options include the Siemens 828D Offline Programming Software with CAD reader, a translator for Fanuc based programs and the ability to network the machine.

Nigel Atherton, MD, XYZ Machine Tools, says: "We are seeing increasing demand from the energy, oil & gas and other sectors that require versatile large turning capacity and with the XYZ XL 780 we now have a complete range of centre lathes that will meet the majority of turning applications that these customers face."
