ESOS lead assessors

03 November 2014

Since 17 October 2014, members of the Energy Institute’s Register of Professional Energy Consultants (RPEC) and the EI’s Chartered Energy Managers have been eligible to conduct energy audits for organisations looking to comply with ESOS, a mandatory scheme for large UK organisations.

Sarah Beacock FEI, skills and capability director, Energy Institute, says: "The EI has been working with DECC on the development of ESOS since last year. We are pleased to see the skills, experience and competence of our members being recognised to help implement this new regulation. ESOS will help to identify areas of potential energy savings but it mustn’t end there. For the scheme to truly effect change, efficiency measures and initiatives identified within each organisation must be implemented."

Neil Peacock CEng FEI, chair, RPEC Steering Group, says, ‘Energy efficiency is a win-win scenario. It can make a significant impact on the bottom line with surprisingly little management effort or investment.  RPEC consultants have years of experience not only in auditing but in implementing the recommendations from audits. They are clearly best placed to advise those seeking to save energy and cut costs, whether your business uses energy in buildings, industry or transport.’

To support companies participating in ESOS, the EI has developed a number of training courses:

•  Preparing your organisation for ESOS will help staff involved in carrying out the ESOS process to understand the practicalities of calculating their organisation’s energy consumption, identifying areas for audit and ensure they are compliant with all ESOS regulations

•  ESOS for senior managers is to help those signing off ESOS audits on behalf of their organisation to clarify their role as a ‘responsible officer’

•  Acting as an ESOS Lead Assessor is a mandatory course for those that will be the Lead Assessor for their organisation or on a consultancy basis. This course will cover the ESOS timetable and regulations, methods of conducting an ESOS assessment and reporting requirements.
