Stephen Pretlove to lead new sustainable engineering school at University of Roehampton London
27 July 2023
THE UNIVERSITY of Roehampton, London, has appointed Stephen Pretlove as the director of sustainable engineering, who will lead the new Sustainable Engineering and Technology Education Centre (SETEC).

The centre will equip the next generation of engineering professionals with the latest green skills and support the UK's strategic journey to achieve net-zero by 2050.
In December 2022, the University won a grant of almost £6m from the Office of Students (OfS) to support the development of SETEC, which will expand the University’s STEM provision and offer new built environment and engineering courses at degree and apprenticeship levels. The centre will also foster greater collaboration opportunities with further education partners and organisations in the local community across London.
As director of SETEC, Pretlove will be responsible for developing and expanding the course provisions within SETEC, including civil engineering, architecture, construction and higher technical qualifications and apprenticeships within the sustainable built environment.
"This role provides a unique opportunity to help launch and establish a leading centre of learning for sustainable engineering and technology in the built environment,: stated Pretlove. "The new Centre will provide crucial education and training for the next generation of industry professionals on a local and national level, and will help meet the UK’s need for green skills to meet net zero aspirations."
Pretlove has been the head of the Lincoln School of Architecture and the Built Environment, and professor of sustainable construction, since 2017. His research focuses on low carbon buildings and sustainability in the built environment, with a particular emphasis on social housing, and a holistic approach to sustainability through the key stages of building design, construction and occupation. His research has received international media coverage by news outlets such as the BBC, Channel 4 and National Geographic.
“The University of Roehampton will play a leading role in training the next generation of professionals within the sustainable built environment, and we are delighted to have Professor Pretlove join the University," said Richard Keogh, pro vice-chancellor (research and external engagement) at the University of Roehampton London.
"Stephen is very highly respected for his research and leadership in this field. He will provide invaluable insight into how we can development a world-class programme of learning and ensure our students are equipped with the knowledge to address the growing challenges within the built environment against the backdrop of the global climate crisis."
