Unlocking battery room data
04 February 2020
According to Philadelphia Scientific, over 80% of forklift batteries don’t achieve their maximum life potential, with more than 25% of potential life often lost due to the way the battery is used. This can add up to thousands of pounds being wasted on site.

Lead-Acid batteries are pretty basic. Sure, they’re the most cost-efficient method of storing energy, and at 99% recyclable they are the most eco-friendly, but when it comes to data and connectivity they are very much in the dark ages. With no usage data, no performance statistics, and no critical alerts it is very hard to correct any hidden behaviour or use patterns that reduce performance.
So how do you to maximise the life of traditional lead-acid batteries and make sure they meet or exceed the full life potential? Philadelphia Scientific has a solution that brings iOT technology to your batteries with the new eGO!c.
The eGO!c is the latest in the eGO! range, turning lead-acid batteries into a smart battery. Taking over 250,000 data samples per day the eGO!c populates 38 individual fields of measurement. Data is wirelessly uploaded via our CloudLink gateway, giving you a simple and secure remote online visibility.
The eGO! has simple bright indicators which help you take care of your battery. If the battery needs water it will flash red, if the battery is too hot it will glow amber, If everything is ok is will flash green.
There are 40 eGO! alerts that can be configured for each site. If a rule is broken an automatic email can be sent to up to three recipients. For example, if a battery needs water, an email can be sent to the person responsible. If that battery then needed water for over 10 days then an email could be sent to the manager. By using these eGO! alerts, performance reducing behaviour can be eliminated.
It is now possible to see how you use your batteries online. You can see how frequently they are used, how often they are charged, how much they are opportunity charged, how much work do your batteries do, and how much cool down they get after charge.
Low electrolyte, over discharge, and high temperatures will reduce the life expectancy of a battery. The eGO! abuse analytics will demonstrate where abuse is happening and how much life is being wasted as a result.
Using the historic data the eGO!c can predict a replacement date based on the use and abuse. This date is dynamic so if your usage patterns change the predicted date will change too. This replacement prediction will predict when you are likely to need to replace the batteries before it becomes a crisis.
The eGO!c improves the way you use your battery fleet and will help batteries reach their full life potential. The information can all be seen on the data portal, batterymanagement.net. With an intuitive user interface, asset owners and managers can view entire fleets across multiple sites within an organisation. The portal provides an overview to quickly identify anomalies, and the ability to drill down into the finest of details. This allows you to pinpoint problem areas and address problems pro-actively.
Using data to prevent premature failure is common in many industries, but Philadelphia Scientific says that, until now, it has not been possible with conventional lead acid batteries. With the eGO!c It is possible to extend the useful life of a battery by several years. Extending the life of a battery by only 30 days will pay for the eGO!.
