Predictability valued in manufacturing

26 February 2020

Perkbox, the employee experience platform, has released the findings of its latest research on workplace culture to coincide with #WorkplaceCultureWeek, an initiative aimed at celebrating every business' workplace culture which is taking place between the 24th-28th of February. The research polled 2,000 working Brits split equally between the Legal and Finance, Healthcare, Energy and Manufacturing, Services and “Other” industries.

Out of all the above, the Energy and Manufacturing Sector was the industry where ‘predictability’ was valued the most, with 58% of employees saying this is what’s most important to them in their job. When asked if they liked to work in an organisation which has clear goals and targets, 83% of employees agreed. Despite this, predictability and creativity is still thriving with a huge 68% of those working in this industry agreeing that they work in a creative environment.

Stability is also something valued by employees in this sector. 24% of them have been in their current role for 4-5 years, which helps explain why 48% describe themselves as ‘feeling settled’ in their current role. What’s more, it’s also promising to see that 66% in the industry agree that they see themselves staying in their current role or current place of employment for many more years.

Salary also ranks high on the list of priorities for employees working in the Energy and Manufacturing Sector. Almost one in three said salary has become more important to them as they have gotten older, while 27% agree that pay is the most important thing for them in their job.

Saurav Chopra, CEO and Co-founder of Perkbox says: “It’s key to be conscious and listen to what employees want and value at work. This can help keep them stay engaged and happy, creating a culture that resonates with them. Of course, every employee has their own interests, skills, likes and dislikes;  it’s impossible to please everyone at every level. However, realising the key trends dominating the industry - things like valuing the status quo at work, or having a stable position, can help personalise their experience and make it more enjoyable.”

Dr Dimitrios Tsivrikos, Business Psychologist at UCL says: “There’s certainly no shortage of headlines about millennials valuing culture and purpose above money and financial rewards. It is this research looking into the value of these elements, that the key trends and findings that we have in psychology are summarised - ultimately, that we must demystify the word ‘culture’ as something that is warm and fuzzy, and actually treat it as a commercial valuable that drives performance, financial and employee wellbeing.

“What’s more, we must realise that the power of culture is such that without it, both companies and employees would suffer a great deal. We should definitely pronounce and support these research findings in the hopes of galvanising both people’s wellbeing and their financial prosperity.”

Perkbox is designed to enrich the personal and working life of employees providing rewards and benefits such as medical assistance and gym membership and discounted cinema tickets.
