Fan coil system installed
15 July 2013
In recent years many of the individual buildings that make up the Westferry Circus office complex at the northern end of Canary Wharf have been subject to refurbishment, the most recent being Number 11 and Westferry House, once better known as the Readers Digest Building.
Playing a key part in Number 11’s update are Ability Projects' Matrix EC/-DC fan coil units, installed within the perimeter and central ceiling voids of its 11 floors of office accommodation. Some 231 off 2-pipe Matrix units are supplied with chilled water from roof mounted chiller plant and are sized to handle 25W/m2 small power load based on a current occupancy density of 1 person/10m2 .Additional chilled water connections installed on each floor cater for future high density requirements of 10W/m2. Fresh air is provided by an existing air handling unit at 14L/sec/person.
Capacities of the fan coil units vary between 1.7 and 6.2kW (cooling) and 1.5 and 3kW (heating), with the latter units, located at the perimeter zones, fitted with heater batteries. Internal noise levels for office accommodation are set at NR38 maximum. All fan coil units are fitted with self-balancing Matrix fan, electric element thyristor, fan failure flag switches, BACnet BMS controls and either 4-port R/L or Belimo P/L control valves.
The fan coil system is said to provide infinite speed control of the entire fan coil unit and of each fan within it, enabling each duct run to be balanced for air volume through fan speed alone.
