Celebrating 50 years

08 October 2013

Sidetracker Engineering, manufacturer of multi-directional reach trucks and sideloaders, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, still producing all machines in the UK and still run by the family that started it.

Back in the 1950s, Peter Dobson saw a need for more efficient materials handling equipment, patented designs for a multi-directional transport system and in 1963 formed his own company. The first trucks were unpowered models, the first powered truck being built in 1969.  In 1976 the Derbyshire factory produced its first fully multi-directional model with the ability to rotate about its own axis. The company is now run by Peter Dobson’s son, David.

The current range includes reach trucks and sideloaders. The reach trucks handle pallets as well as long loads within a standard aisle and are available with load capacities to 8t and masts to 10m high. Sideloaders are built in three-wheel and four-wheel versions with load capacities to 10t and lift heights to 15m. They can work in aisles only 1500mm wide.

Standard features include electro-hydraulics and dual power systems.  Most machines are built to meet customers’ specific requirements with regard to mast design, dimensions and power system, LPG-powered versions now being available alongside electric models.  Recent developments include man-up order-pickers, compact multi-directional counterbalance lift trucks and heavy-duty platform trucks.
