New White Paper: M12 Power (L-coded)

28 November 2019

A new white paper – M12 Power (L-coded) – is available from Murrelektronik.

Written by Paul Just, senior product manager at Murrelektronik's headquarters in Oppenweiler, Germany, the white paper provides an overview of important changes in the field and, for PROFINET applications in particular, the standardisation of L coded power connectors. Topics covered are: Digital Transformation and the need for standardization of Connection Technology; Functional Grounding Methods; and the Profibus and Profinet International (PI) guideline for Profinet Wiring.

Decentralisation plays a key role within digitisation in automation technology. True to the zero cabinet philosophy, Murrelektronik says there is a growing trend towards shifting applications and components out of the traditional control cabinet (IP20) and into the field (IP67) as part of smaller units or machines.

The increasing level of automation and need to map digital twins goes hand-in-hand with growing signal and data density and more compact dimensions. This 'miniaturisation' increases power and performance needs. Compact M12 power cables (L-coded) can transmit up to 16A in a smaller form factor. The power supply can be fed to several modules. This simplifies installation and reduces cable runs. PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET international) sees the M12 L-coded connectors as the future standard in power connectors.
