Modular burner management
17 December 2014
The BT300 series of burner management controllers is a new generation of products from Lamtec UK, an independent combustion control specialist that manufactures burner management controls, in-situ flue gas O2 and COe probes and analysers, and flame detection equipment.

The BT300 is targeted at smaller monobloc burners from 300kW. BT320 is the base model and can be used on single fuel burners in a non-continuous operation mode. There are dedicated outputs for two stepper motors to drive an air damper and a fuel valve. The BT330 adds a third stepper motor output, as well as allowing for continuous operation when used with a suitable flame detector. The big brother is the BT340 which is a dual-fuel controller that allows the operator to switch between oil and gas.
All models have fuel valve control, valve proving, fuel/air ratio control and flame supervision as standard with modulation control using a simple external three-position controller. If required, tracking from a third-party source or internal PID temperature and pressure control can be employed using an add-on module.
The concept of the BT300 is that users only pay for what they need and so external modules are available for extended functionality.
There are additional modules to integrate variable speed fan control, load control and fieldbus communications such as Modbus and Profibus. Stepper motors are available from 0.8 to 9Nm with cable lengths to 3m.
Installation has been simplified with RAST5 connectors that reduce termination time and reduce the chances of cross-wiring by using ‘keyed’ plugs and sockets. Servo motors are supplied with either ‘flying leads’ or sockets that are used with prewired RAST5 cables.
The system can be fully operated and commissioned from an HMI. The UI300 display module is entirely driven by intuitive symbols, which overcomes the need to translate into different languages; this is an ideal solution for burner makers and systems integrators who operate in export markets. Emulating more expensive controllers, the UI300 can be used to backup and restore the data allowing quick and simple replacement of a defective base unit.
Remote Software is also available allowing users to carry out all tasks from initial commissioning to servicing and daily operation.
The full BT300 range is scalable, allowing owners to start with the basic configuration and add energy saving features such as variable speed fan control, oxygen trim and COe control. LAMTEC’s newly-released LT3-F flue gas analyser now enables oxygen trim and COe control to be implemented using a single KS1-D flue gas probe which measures O2 and COe simultaneously.
Lamtek says that until now oxygen trim and COe control have not been cost effective for smaller burners, but that with the competitive pricing of the BT300 and the introduction of the LT3-F flue gas analyser, payback periods have been significantly reduced.
The BT300 range conforms to CE and UL approvals standards and the BT330 and BT340 are available in versions for use in SIL3 (EN61508) installations.
